Jeff’s VC Picks

Jeff is the founder and creative director of Visual Contrast and this week we are highlighting his favourite pieces from the VC catalogue. Drawn to bold designs and earthy colour tones, Jeff’s selections span multiple mediums and are Visual Contrast staples. We sat down with Jeff to learn more about why he loves these pieces.

Retro Panel Yellow III

This piece is nostalgic for me because it was part of the first silkscreen collection released by VC in 2017. Inspired by retro designs, I love how timeless and fresh it feels each time I see it. The panel shape is unique and also very versatile in the way it can be incorporated into spaces either by itself or in a grouping with other retro panels from the collection. I like how the shapes overlap to create new shapes and the transparent inks blend to create new colours.

Impressions Round

Sculpture is my favourite art form/medium and this piece has sculptural qualities with its highly textural finish, round shape and bevelled edge. The rust colour is inspired by European vintage design and has a rich, warm and earthy mood that I love. One of our most popular collections, the Impressions series, has always been a favourite of mine.

High Contrast

I’m probably biassed because this composition is taken from one of my sketches but this is probably my favourite piece from VC. I love the simplicity and bold graphic design, and the amount of negative space which showcases the handmade Japanese paper that the art is silkscreened onto. The clean lines of the design are framed by the uneven edge of the paper which gives the art a 'real’ feeling (vs digital) and softens the overall composition. I tend to lean toward minimal and bold art that makes a dramatic statement which this piece definitely accomplishes.
