GINTARE

“I see a future where our interior spaces ground us and bring us closer to the natural world”

Creating artwork in a wide range of styles and media, Gintare’s exceptional use of colour and texture is prominent in all of her work. Whether she is working with ground pumice stone, torn pieces of paper, or acrylic paint and markers, there is always a sense of dynamism and energy in her pieces, with complementary fields of colour, textural motion, and overlapping forms. Motivated by the natural world, Gintare’s artwork invites the viewer to be introspective and revel in its grounding quality. Gintare believes that art has the power to transform our lives and she is committed to creating work that helps people connect with themselves, each other, and the world around us.

Q&A WITH THE ARTIST

If you had the chance to live during a different artistic movement other than now, which one would you choose?

Abstract Expressionism in the 50’s. I would be living in lower Manhattan getting into heated discussions with Rothko, Pollock, Frankenthaller and de Kooning about existential struggles, and experimenting with intense emotion on super large canvases. That would be a dream.

If you could interview a creative person (past or present), who would that person be?

I think someone like Leonardo Da Vinci would be very interesting to interview because he is from a completely different time period, and his life seems so distant from mine, but I believe that we would find a lot in common. Apart from the interview, I would request to shadow him for at least a year.

What inspires you?

Nature and science, good music, good films, traveling and exploring, creative people…and sometimes I’m even inspired by my own self.

If you could choose a theme song for the rest of your life, what would it be?

Queen- Don’t stop me now.

If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be? Please explain your choice.

For now I would choose Bali, because I like the beautiful lush rainforest setting. I like the idea of taking a dip in an emerald pool, going to the beach, and getting a massage everyday. Going to breakfast on a scooter to eat exotic dragonfruit acai bowls. The people are nice, and the culture is very zen so I feel like it would be a relaxing place to live.

What do you wish to accomplish with your art?

I would like my artwork to be part of a community of likeminded people who appreciate the beauty of design. The things we surround ourselves with is such an impactful aspect of our lives, and I wish for people to think of my work when they are creating the perfect space for themselves.

If you only had 24 hours to live, how would you spend your day?

Probably very normally. With friends and family, telling them how much I love them. Maybe i’d go swimming with otters and have a delicious meal at sunset with oceanfront views. Then go out dancing, and then some drunken karaoke to end the night.

When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person?

When I moved from Lithuania to the US at age 13. Being immersed in a new culture, I had to find a creative outlet to cope with the changes.

Do you do anything special to get your "creative juices" flowing?

Travel, go to museums, consume all forms of art. I often look over past ideas or sketchbooks. And I sometimes just force myself to sit down and start doodling, creating something with materials I am not used to.

If you had the opportunity, what creative person (living or dead) would you like to work with? Why?

I would like to work with Fernando Mastrangelo because his style is refined, elevated and elegant, and he works with unusual materials. I could spot his pieces instantly because of their distinct style. It would be really cool to see how his mind works.

Why are you an artist?

I always had the need to create something to feel human. If I don’t create, I become deeply unhappy and unbalanced. I come from a family of creative women so it has been engrained in me. I think being creative is a big part of being human, and I don’t shy away from expressing my creativity in different forms whether it’s painting, playing music, or cooking.

If you could change one aspect of our society through your work, what would it be?

This is probably a big request but I would like my work to instill wellness and peace into our busy society. To help people notice and appreciate the simple things though unexpected elements in my artwork. To help them connect to nature in some way. Our society is constantly bombarded with new information and stimuli and I would like my work to be someplace they could rest their eyes and feel stillness within.

What’s your weirdest secret?

I like to eat lemons with the rind

What do you focus on when you create?

Honestly, not much. I just get in the zone and often times daydream.
