HOPE

Hope’s abstract paintings are full of colour, movement, and life. Her expressive brushstrokes and carefully placed fields of colour complement one another, making for a dynamic composition that analyses the interplay between overlapping colours of varying saturations and differing applications of paint.

The viewer can feel the gestural quality of Hope’s movements on the canvas, exposing the unrestrained, yet peaceful nature of Hope’s work.

Q&A WITH THE ARTIST

What inspires you?

Nature inspires me the most: the smells and textures, the swaying of trees, sunlight on water,  flowers climbing buildings. Sometimes it's a line from a poem, a melody in a song, or a glimpse into a restaurant at night.

Theme song for the rest of your life and why?

I can't decide between a Beatles song or Clair De Lune...I love the Beatles and think their music is the best and Clair De Lune is one of the most loveliest songs I've ever heard.

If you could live anywhere in the world where and why?

I would like to live in a quiet countryside with lots of shade and rolling hills. I'd love it to be overcast most of the time with lush and green trees. There would be lots of space and privacy to wander as I please with no interruptions.

Do you do anything to get your "creative juices" flowing?

When I need to get the creative juices flowing when I'm feeling low on inspiration, I like to go outside for a walk. I find that nature always sparks something in me to want to create and gets me excited to start some new project.

Why are you an artist?

I'm addicted to creating. I am constantly itching to make things and express feelings through paint or other mediums. I love how I feel when I'm creating. I enjoy the process of being so aware and present, but also how the creative process takes its own path. I love the challenge and the freedom that comes with making something. Creating is exciting and I find it so invigorating.

If you had only 24 hours to live, how would you spend your day?

I would spend my last 24 hours with my husband and daughters. We'd spend the day enjoying a picnic somewhere lovely. In the evening my dearest extended family and I would have a delicious meal together with some yummy wine and laugh all night playing board.

When was the first time that you remember realizing that you are a creative person?

It struck me when I was in my chemistry class in high school and I didn't write my name on my paper but my teacher knew it was mine because there were doodles all over it. I was always creating and everyone knew that about me, but I didn't realize that about myself until then.

If you had the opportunity, what creative person (living or dead) would you like to work with? Why?

I've always been very fond of John Lennon and his lyrical/musical creations. I would've loved to have collaborated on a song with him or paint a piece together. I've admired his in-depth moodiness he creates in his songs. He had such a beautiful melancholiness about him, but he painted it with hope. I admired his desire to change things in the world, to make a difference.

What do you focus on when you create?

Part of my focus when I'm creating is the pieces of inspiration I usually have on hand to get ideas from. I like having that as a jumping off point to steer me in the direction I'm aiming for, but it's also important that I focus on being present in the moment and letting that guide me. It's a mix of focusing on trying to create something I have envisioned in my mind while also allowing the process to unfold on its own.
