Project Spotlight: Elara

Collaborating with Sybille Zimmermann of Studio Zimmermann, we created the artwork for Elara, an upscale apartment complex in Woodland Hills, California. Inspired by the Mediterranean style architecture of the building, Sybille wanted to “blend historic European influences and modern minimalism to create vibrant yet timeless spaces.” We created the artworks for multiple public rooms and amenity spaces in the building, bringing bright color and playful designs to each space.

With bright rooms filled with lots of natural light, Sybille was drawn to natural materials and intriguing color combinations to make the spaces feel “airy, elegant, and welcoming.” Balancing “vibrant, sculptural elements in the leasing office to spark energy” and “softer, more meditative cues in the coworking space to encourage focus and ease,” Sybille tailored each space to its purpose and function. From terracotta tiles to black metal chandeliers to woven chairs, Sybille mixed a variety of textures and patterns to create an alluring layered space. With earthy tones like rust, sage, and terracotta as the base color scheme of the rooms, we decided that the art should pack a punch with its color while adding texture with interesting materials.

Drawing tones from the light pink couch and bright yellow curtain covers, we created two custom Sculpted Panels for the niches above the desks in the leasing office. Using a new approach with two-toned color, the Sculpted Panels use layering to create depth in their composition. With hand-carved sculpting paste overlapping painted handmade paper, the artworks complement the color scheme of the room while adding to the layered texture in the space.

In the coworking room, we created two round Impressions for the recessed seating areas. The round artworks fit perfectly into the arched niches, adding a pop of color with their ochre and rust colorways, and complementing the sage green walls. The highly textural surface of the artworks adds to the natural and organic feel of the space and gives a calming feeling to the room.
